This tour includes:

• Transfer from Clyde on the first night of your tour to your accommodation
• Two nights of accommodation in either the Omakau Bedpost Old Post Office, Postmasters House or Solandra Lodge including continental breakfast.
• Two days hire of a comfort or 29r mountain bike with helmet, pannier (for those bits and pieces you’ll need during the day), cycle computer, light (for the tunnels), repair kit, pump, and bottle cage.
• Full trip itinerary so you know what you’re doing and what there is to see and do.
• Full back up should you have a mechanical issue (very unlikely), however you need to know how to fix your own flat tyre should you get one. 
• Transfer from Omakau to Oturehua on your first day cycling (so you get to ride downhill)
• Bag transport back through to Clyde on your last day.
• Bike return from Clyde.

Accommodation

• Choose from three great properties – subject to availability and suitability at time of booking. 
• All properties have full kitchen, shared bathroom and DVD entertainment and a continental breakfast of cereals, breads, spreads, yoghurt, tinned fruit, juice, milk and tea and coffee is provided each day. 
• Bonus - If you put together a group of four then we’ll provide you with sole occupancy for your group. 
• If you’re travelling as a single, twin or couple then you’ll have your own room (no sharing with someone you don’t know here)

Details

• Day 1 - shebikeshebikes meet you in Clyde in the late afternoon and transport you to your accommodation in Omakau
• Day 2 – shebikeshebikes transfer you and your bikes through to Oturehua to start your ride, 30 km to cover today back Omakau through the Poolburn Gorge with its tunnels and viaduct.
• Day 3 – you head off in the morning through to Clyde with the option of riding the Alexandra to Clyde section on the Rail Trail or the 150th Anniversary Track (aka The River Track). When you get back to your car your bags will be waiting and you turn your bikes in before heading off.

Even if you haven’t been on a bike for a very long time because you’re old enough to have ridden a horse to school or what you used to refer to as your bike is now in your local transport museum, they have the solution. Their Specialized mountain bikes come in “cushy, sprung seat, upright, comfort” low step or standard bar versions or the more sporty 29’r wheeled “have you noticed that my bigger wheel’s shallow curve is rolling over the trail surface more easily?” versions. They have a tandem too for those who like the thought of the “captain and stoker” relationship.

Having done the Otago Central Rail Trail is an automatic conversation starter – even if you have only actually done one or two days of the best bits – minor details for busy people. So the next time that someone says “Oh have you done the Rail Trail?” don’t be afraid to throw in a few trail-related points of interest. Like that the Poolburn gorge is home to the rare New Zealand falcon (Karearea) and you of course have actually seen one (check out the back of the $20 note for details), that although Cyclophobia is a very real and scary phenomenon for some - you now have empathy as you also experienced the rapid heartbeat and tunnel vision on day one of this trip. Just quietly - over 50% of cyclists forget to take off their sunglasses when going through the deep dark Poolburn tunnels and remark on how dark it is – much to the amusement of their companions.
