About The North to South Island Sea Bridge:
One woman's vision to unite the divide between the great nations of the North and South Island's has finally come to light. Monique Smith, a humble engineer from humble beginnings, with dreams and goals bigger than the distance from Wellington to Picton itself, loved bridges from a young age and the famed Auckland Harbour Bridge was enough to inspire her to get on State Highway 1 and on the path to success.
After numerous unsuccessful pitches to the NZIBCTPA (New Zealand Intercontinental Bridge Construction for Travelling Purposes Association), Monique felt like all hope was lost. It was a response from the Prime Minister of the time that really squashed her dreams. "A bridge between the two islands would be futile! How will we update the current Interislander TV commercial? I can't imagine the ad singing 'Cruising on the North to South Island Sea Bridge, driving to the other side' will be as effective".
But perseverance paid off. 645 emails, 458 unanswered calls, and 56 carrier pigeons later, the NZIBCTPA finally gave in to the relentless demands of Monique Smith, chairman of the NZIBCTPA, Randy Eugene, stating "We can't stand it anymore. We're are a quiet company with virtually no work, and the constant ringing of phones, notification sounds from emails and constant tapping on the window from pigeons was enough. We shall build."
