About the Kawiti Family Glowworm Caves:
Located in the heart of the Waiomio Valley, Northland, The Kawiti Family Glowworm Caves are home to thousands of luminous glowworms, breath taking rock formations and lush green rainforest. Today, the Kawiti Caves are owned and operated by the Kawiti Family, direct descendants of the chieftainess Hineamaru of the Ngati Hine Tribe. Guided tours were established in the 1950’s by Te Tawai Kawiti, direct descendant of chieftainess Hineamaru. Since then, Te Tawai’s family have followed in his footsteps – making history and nature come alive with entertaining commentary, rich local knowledge and unique insight into the life cycle of the New Zealand glowworm (Arachnocampa Luminosa).
Come along our journey through the Kawiti Caves to discover the wonderful world of glowworms. Let us wow you with our Cathedral of glow in the dark friends and remarkable stories.
