Itinerary:
Day 1:
Arrive at Forgotten World Motel in Taumarunui where you will be shuttled with your canoe to Cherry Grove. There you will receive a safety briefing by experienced guides and set off down the magnificent Whanganui River.
Canoe 22km downstream on the upper reaches of the Whanganui River and travel through bush-clad hills, see waterfalls, spectacular sheer gorges and over small bouncy rapids from Cherry Grove to Ohinepane.See the remains of rock weirs made over 100 years ago.
You can opt for a stopover at Laurent's Lavender Farm for a cup of coffee or a browse in the gift shop. End off at Ohinepane and board your return shuttle to Taumarunui.
Spend the night at Forgotten World Motel (not included, but can be booked for an additional fee).
Day 2:
Set off down the line along 16km of the Forgotten World Railway. Travel through 5 tunnels, including the longest tunnel (1.5km), and marvel at the beautiful hand-built brick tunnels. Enjoy cruising through stunning hill country farms and native bush.
A drink and some lovely home baking will be waiting your arrival at Matiere, the turnaround point. On your return journey you'll get to experience the ride from a whole new perspective. Switch drivers, take photos and enjoy the stunning scenery on your return journey to Okahukura. Board the shuttle to return to the Forgotten World Motel.
