About Te Wairoa The Buried Village:

The Buried Village is one of New Zealand's most visited historic sites that can be traced back to the Depression. The Smith family have put their hard work, blood, sweat and tears into the thriving attraction it is today, and the dedicated family are committed to providing you with a truly memorable experience. On 10 June 1886, Mt Tarawera violently and unexpectedly erupted, bombarding the peaceful village of Te Wairoa, killing more than 150 people and destroying the eighth wonder of the world - the Pink and White Terraces.Thanks to the three generations of the Smith family, you too can see what the village was like before, during and after the devastating eruption.
