In family violence situations, threatening, harming or even killing a pet to control other family members is all too common. Animal abuse can be a significant barrier to women escaping family violence as most can’t take their pets with them when seeking refuge. That’s why New Zealand's first shelter dedicated to housing pets affected by family violence is being built, to provide a temporary safe haven for pets while their owners escape abuse. Pet Refuge will rescue pets affected by domestic violence from all over New Zealand with the end goal of reuniting them with their owners so they can start new lives together in violence-free homes.
