Itinerary:
Day 1 – Torrent Bay to Awaroa Lodge
- Approx. six-hour walk – 17.5kms
- Pickup from your accommodation (or nearby) in the Nelson area at approx. 7am.
- Road transport to Marahau arriving at the AquaTaxi base there at 8.30am.
Depart on the 9 am water taxi for Torrent Bay. Then begin your walk at the settlement there, and head up and over and to the iconic Falls River swing bridge, and further on to Bark Bay. From this lovely bay, the track heads up the largest ascent on the whole trip ending up at back at sea level at Tonga Quarry and Onetahuti Bays. A lovely walk along the crescent-shaped Onetahuti Beach follows and then the last saddle sees you arrive at wonderful Awaroa Lodge where you will spend the night.
Day 2 Awaroa Inlet – Totaranui and water taxi return to Marahau
- Approx. three-hour walk - 8.1kms
About 20 minutes from Awaroa Lodge is a wide tidal crossing, you'll then journey into some wonderful podocarp forest before bursting out on the golden sand of Waiharakeke Bay and Goat Bay, then start your final ascent over to the popular camping spot of Totaranui. Once at Totaranui, the AquaTaxi will pick you up and return you past all those golden sand beaches to Marahau. Our land transport to Nelson conveniently departs from the AquaTaxi base dropping you in Nelson around 6pm.
