Itinerary:
Day 1: Auckland City – Waitomo – Taumarunui

The rental company will meet you at the airport and take you to collect your car and sign the rental contract.
Follow SH1 towards Hamilton. At Ngaruawahia take the SH39 to Te Kowhai. Continue on SH39 toward Otorohonga, just before you enter the town turn right onto Waitomo Valley Road. Once you arrive in Waitomo Village, turn left and continue on Fullerton road to the (Private) Footwhistle Glowworm Caves.

Day 2: Taumarunui- Whangamomona (Breakfast, Lunch)

Located in the heart of the North Island is one of the most isolated regions in the country which the Forgotten World Highway now passes through. A railway network originally built between 1901 and 1930 spans over 140km and was much used when the area prospered back in the coal mining days.
On the 10-tunnel tour you’ll set off on an adventure which will take you through parts of rural the North Island to places that time forgot. You’ll also make stops along the way so your guide, in the leading cart, can recount the history of the railway tracks, the coal mines and a former local gaol. Stop at Tokirima Station and enjoy a Ploughman’s lunch between your adventures before taking the shuttle to the Ohinepane Landing on the Whanganui River. In the afternoon embark on a Jet Boat journey on the Whanganui river and take in the awe-inspiring scenery.

Day 3: Whangamomona - New Plymouth (Breakfast)

Follow SH43, the Forgotten World Highway to Stratford where you will take SH3 to New Plymouth.
According to a Maori legend, the Taranaki brother of Tongariro had to go into exile on the coast after the loss of a battle. Today the Taranaki region, with its main town New Plymouth, is a dynamic place to ski in winter while summer is devoted to hiking, surfing and the many festivals that enliven the city.

Day 4: New Plymouth (Breakfast)

Day at leisure to enjoy New Plymouth and surrounds.

Day 5: New Plymouth – Paraparaumu – Kapiti Island (Breakfast and Dinner)

Take SH3 towards Palmerston North, at Sanson turn right onto SH1 through Levin to Paraparaumu.
Board your ferry from Paraparaumu to Waiorua Bay and begin your nature-inspired experience. Enjoy 15 minutes crossing to Kapiti Island, an internationally renowned sanctuary for New Zealand native birds, a genuine native forest and a reserve for New Zealand wildlife. Because Kapiti Island is a precious nature reserve there are rules and regulations that you must follow in order to help protect our native birds on the Island. This includes having a Bio-security check of your bags prior to leaving the ferry
After the short cruise, you will check in into your accommodation at the Kapiti Nature Lodge and listen to the incredible story about the Island’s fauna, flora and history since the 1800s. You will then be able to relax before a wonderful dinner. The kiwi night spotting walk starts around 9 pm. There are approximately 1200 Little Spotted Kiwi on Kapiti Island and this 1h – 1h30 tour is your best chance of seeing a Little Spotted Kiwi in a predator-free area and in their natural habitat. Kiwi spotting is all year round. Seeing Kiwi in the wild has been described by some as a very special experience.

Day 6: Paraparaumu – Wellington Airport

From Paraparaumu continue south on SH1 to Wellinton.
Arrive Wellington, and drop off rental car at the airport by 4.30pm.
