About ANZAC'S on the Western Front Tour:
The Australian War Memorial in Villers-Bretonneux commemorates the battle of 24/25 April 1918, when Commonwealth Soldiers liberated the town. In front of it lie the graves of over 770 Australian soldiers, as well as those of other Commonwealth soldiers. Since 2008 it has been the site of the special ANZAC Day dawn service. Experience this unique event on our six-day ANZAC tour departing 22 April 2019 and join fellow countrymen and local townspeople to remember those who fought during the Great War at one its most poignant sites. Villers-Bretonneux became famous in 1918, when the German advance on Amiens ended in the capture of the village by their tanks and infantry on 23 April. On the following day, the 4th and 5th Australian Divisions, with units of the 8th and 18th Divisions, recaptured the whole of the village and on 8 August 1918, the 2nd and 5th Australian Divisions advanced from its eastern outskirts in the Battle of Amiens. The Australian National Memorial is erected to commemorate all Australian soldiers who fought in France and Belgium during the First World War.

Day One Lille - (D)
Today you’ll meet with the group in Lille, where you’ll enjoy an included dinner together
Day Two Lille - Ypres - (B)
Your first full day will take us to Ypres via the Messines Ridge and the city itself. Here, you’ll pay a visit to the Hooge Crater Museum and trenches. The final part of the day includes attendance at the daily playing of the Last Post under the Menin Gate at 8.00 pm.
Day Three Ypres - Amiens - (B)
Leaving Belgium, today you’ll cross into Flanders and spend time at Fromelles, the site of the disastrous attack of 19 July 1916, where you’ll visit Pheasant Wood Cemetery and the new exhibition nearby. Next, you’ll visit the Wellington Quarries, which were fashioned from existing medieval quarries by New Zealand Engineers in 1916 and 17 as part of the preparations for the Battle of Arras. You’ll remember Australia’s role in this battle at Bullecourt, with a stop at the Digger Memorial.
Day Four Amiens - ANZAC Dawn Ceremony - Amiens - (B, D)
You’ll have a very early start today, leaving your hotel in time for the Dawn Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial in Villers-Bretonneux. The service will be an unforgettable and emotive experience, which you’ll share with the locals and fellow Australians and New Zealanders who have journeyed here to pay tribute to the brave ANZAC soldiers who fought for the town. The rest of the day will be yours to spend at your leisure before you meet for an included dinner this evening.
Day Five Amiens - The Somme - Amiens - (B)
The Somme still captivates the soul – and it’s here that the ANZACs first saw major action in the middle of 1916. Pozières and Mouquet Farm were especially important for the Australians, and Longueval and Flers for the Kiwis. You’ll also remember the colossal loss experienced by Great Britain with a visit to the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme.
Day Six Amiens - Villers-Bretonneux - Lille - (B)
As the home of the National War Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux is central to Australian commemoration and memory. Here, you’ll visit the Franco-Australian Museum, before shifting your focus to the last year of the war, 1918, with a visit to Le Hamel – the site of the successful 4 July attack. Afterwards, you’ll return to Lille, where the tour will come to a close.
