About Nanny's Eatery:
JP is from Jamaica and has traversed the globe as a chef, including a 2-year stint in a 2-Star Michelin Restaurant in Denmark.
The name of
Nanny's Eatery is derived from one of Jamaica’s seven National heroes. Nanny or Queen Nanny was a powerful female leader of the Jamaican Maroons in the eighteenth century.
The Maroons were slaves who escaped from the plantations and formed their own communities in the dense forest of Jamaica. Nanny was a great warrior queen with excellent warfare and leadership skills.
Like Jamaican culture and history, Nanny represents something “creole” a mixture of different cultures, which is what we see in their style of cooking. Nanny’s serves food inspired by this cultural “creole-ness” that suits the Kiwi taste. Promoting Jamaica’s national motto “Out of Many, One People” as tribute to the unity of the different cultural minorities inhabiting the nation.
